Dr. Espíritu is a researcher at the Barents Institute at the University of Tromsø, The Arctic University of Norway. She has published on her research on the impact of industrialization on indigenous peoples in Siberia and more generally on Circumpolar Northern communities. Aileen has ongoing research on sustainable development in the Arctic regions, notably its urban areas; region-building in the Arctic and the Barents Region; identity politics in indigenous and non-indigenous Northern communities; the impact of industrialization and post-industrialization on mono-industry towns in the High North; and the politics of community sustainability in Russia in comparative perspective.

Dr. Andrey N. Petrov is Director of the ARCTICenter and Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Northern Iowa. Dr. Petrov is an economic and social geographer who specializes in Arctic economy, regional development and post-Soviet society, with an emphasis on the social geography of indigenous populations of Russia. His current research is focused on regions of the Russian and Canadian North and concerns regional development, spatial organization, and restructuring of peripheral economies. Dr. Petrov leads the Research Coordination Network in Arctic Sustainability (Arctic-FROST). He has published on issues pertaining to socio-economic crisis, development, and demographic dynamics of indigenous and non-Indigenous populations in the North.

Diane Hirshberg is Professor of Education Policy at the Institute of Social and Economic Research, University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), and director of the UAA Center for Alaska Education Policy Research. She also serves as Advisor to the UAA Chancellor on Arctic Research and Education. Her research interests include education policy analysis, indigenous education, circumpolar education issues, and school change. Dr. Hirshberg sits on both the International Arctic Social Sciences Association Council and the steering committee for the NSF-Funded Arctic FROST Research Collaboration Network. She also is a member of the “visionary group” for the Advancing Native Dialogues on Racial Equity project with the First Alaskans Institute. She teaches in the UAA Honors College and the College of Education. She has a PhD in Education from UCLA, a Master of Public Administration from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley.

Donald Forbes is a Research Scientist Emeritus with the Geological Survey of Canada at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Dalhousie University. Don has been involved for over 40 years in studies of Arctic coasts and related processes, including coastal flooding and erosion hazards and coastal response to climate change, working throughout the Canadian Arctic, as well as in southern Canada, Ireland, and the South Pacific. He was an early proponent and has served as project co-lead over the past 12 years of the ArcticNet Network of Centres of Excellence. Don is an Associate Editor of Sustainability Science and Vice Chair of Future Earth Coasts (formerly LOICZ). He edited the State of the Arctic Coast 2010 report, co-sponsored by IASC, LOICZ, AMAP, and IPA. His recent work has focused on research co-design and knowledge sharing in northern coastal communities, aiming to enhance local knowledge accessibility to support adaptation and sustainability. He is a founding member and co-lead of CACCON, the Circum-Arctic Coastal Communities KnOwledge Network.
